The death of a Brooklyn financier who died during a gay bondage hookup has officially been deemed a homicide, police said Thursday.
Neil Rodney Smith, 57, was found dead in the bedroom of his Dumbo apartment with a wet towel stuffed in his mouth and a pillow over his face on June 19, following the late-night tryst.
Police believe Smith, who was CEO of the investment firm Infraccess, hooked up with a man he met online and invited to his apartment the previous evening, officials said.
Police are investigating whether that person may have been a prostitute.
Shortly before his death, a guest who was staying at Smith’s apartment heard the two having sex, police sources said. The following day, the house guest discovered him dead in the bedroom.
Smith did not have any trauma to his body and it’s unclear if he was intentionally killed or if he was killed accidentally during the sexual encounter.
Police said it appears Smith’s credit card was swiped during the rendezvous.
Surveillance video from the building shows the mystery man entering while a female waits outside.
No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.
The Post has reached out to the Medical Examiner’s Office for the exact cause of Smith’s death.
